Growing in the Lord is like running a marathon! Everybody profits from following the example of godly Christians that serve as role models and avoiding those who don't. Much is at stake here because if you follow the wrong example and get derailed, you might not cross the finish line and realize the fullness of Christ in glory.

Paul went through a complete reversal of how he viewed his life after he became a disciple of Christ. Al his past accomplishments that he had been terribly proud of, he now considered to be nothing but dung. The only thing that Paul valued was knowing Christ and experiencing more of Him in his life. In fact, Paul considered growing deeper with the Lord Jesus as winning the prize!

In Matthew 18, Jesus seems to teach that we should mutilate our bodies if we are to make it to heaven. Is this REALLY what Jesus was teaching? If not, why all of the teachings about cutting off your hand or plucking out your eye?! As we look deeper into what Jesus was referring to, we see that He isn't calling for you to abuse your body, but to be aggressive in dealing with that which abuses us...sin.

The Philippians were doing a miserable job at living the worthy life for Christ. To correct the situation, Paul realized that they needed not just theoretical teaching but living examples of how to live a life of service for Christ.

The Philippians were divided and fractured in their church. They had vices that were frustrating the unity of the body and preventing them from being effective in reaching their city for Christ. Paul show them their defective attitudes, then shows them attitudes that foster unity so that believers can march together and fulfill the Great Commission.
